NRI Guide: Keep Your Parents in India on Track With Medicines

The mydawAI team · · 4 min read

The short answer

For NRIs, the hardest part of caring for parents in India is not knowing what happens day to day. mydawAI fixes that: your parents get medicine reminders on WhatsApp, you get an alert if a dose is missed, and refills go to their local chemist only after you approve.

Why is caring for parents' medicines from abroad so hard?

Time zones, distance and limited visibility. When it is morning dose time in Pune, you might be asleep in Toronto or in a meeting in Dubai. A weekly video call cannot tell you whether the evening tablet was taken on Tuesday.

Many NRI families rely on a neighbour, a relative or a part time helper. That helps, but it is still guesswork, and it puts a lot of trust on one person's memory.

What is the best way for an NRI to manage parents' medicines?

Set up reminders that run on their own in India time, and give yourself a way to see what happened. mydawAI sends reminders on WhatsApp at your parents' local time and records each Taken tap, so you are not dependent on anyone's memory.

Because everything runs on WhatsApp, it works the same whether you are in London, Singapore or the Gulf. You manage from your phone, your parents tap Taken on theirs.

How do I set this up from abroad?

You can do it entirely from where you live. Here is the order most NRI families follow:

  1. Sign up for mydawAI with your WhatsApp number.
  2. Add each parent to your Care Circle with their Indian WhatsApp number and language, English or Hindi.
  3. Your parent gets a WhatsApp message asking them to agree. Until they do, their reminders come to you with their name attached.
  4. Ask your parents to send you a photo of their latest prescription, and upload it to mydawAI. It reads the medicines and asks about anything missing.
  5. Review and save. Reminders start on their schedule.
  6. Turn on missed dose alerts and auto-refill.

How will I know if my parents miss a dose?

Turn on escalation. If a dose is not marked Taken, mydawAI resends the reminder at the interval you set. If it is still untaken after the retries, you get one WhatsApp alert for that dose.

That alert is your cue to call home, or to ask a relative nearby to check in. More detail is in our guide to missed dose alerts for caregivers.

How do refills work when I am not in India?

mydawAI keeps count of stock as doses are taken. When something runs low and auto-refill is on, mydawAI asks you on WhatsApp first. Once you reply yes, the order goes to your parents' local pharmacy on WhatsApp with the prescription. Pharmacies receive orders between 9 AM and 6 PM India time.

WorryHow mydawAI helps
"Did Papa take his morning dose?"Taken taps are recorded per dose
"Nobody told me Mummy missed it"Caretaker alert after retries
"The tablets ran out again"Low stock triggers a refill ask
"I cannot call the chemist from here"Order goes to the pharmacy on WhatsApp after your yes
"Where is the prescription?"Stored encrypted, sent with refill orders

Can my parents ask questions while I am asleep?

Yes. Chintu, the mydawAI koala, is on WhatsApp around the clock and speaks English and Hindi. Your parents can ask what is due next or general questions about a medicine on their list.

Chintu does not diagnose and never changes a dose. If your parent asks something that needs a doctor, Chintu declines and alerts you. For emergencies, your parents should call their doctor or 112. It helps to save their doctors' numbers in the mydawAI doctors list so you have them handy too.

Is my parents' data safe?

Medicine details and prescriptions are encrypted with AES-256 before they are stored, uploaded files are encrypted, and mydawAI runs on AWS in Mumbai.
