Did I Take My Pill? How to Know for Sure Every Time

The mydawAI team · · 3 min read

The short answer

The only reliable way to know whether you took a pill is to record it the moment you take it. A daily pillbox works at home, and mydawAI records it on WhatsApp: tap Taken on the reminder and you can check later in the app or simply ask Chintu.

Why can't I remember whether I took my pill?

Because taking a daily pill is so routine that one day blurs into the next. Your memory of swallowing a tablet this morning looks almost exactly like your memory of doing it yesterday. That is normal, and it happens to people of every age.

The result is a familiar moment: you are standing in the kitchen holding the strip, trying to work out if today's tablet is already gone. Both wrong answers are a problem. Skipping means a missed dose. Taking another "just in case" can mean a double dose.

This guide is about making that moment disappear. For the bigger picture on remembering, see how to remember to take your medicines.

What is the most reliable way to know if I took my pill?

Make a record at the moment you take it, every single time. A record does not depend on memory, so it does not blur.

There are three common ways to do this:

  • A daily pillbox: if today's compartment is empty, the dose is taken. Simple and visual, but only at home and only if you fill it correctly.
  • A tick on a paper chart: a printed chart on the fridge with a box for each dose. Works if the pen is always there.
  • A one-tap record on your phone: mydawAI sends the reminder on WhatsApp with a Taken button. One tap records it, wherever you are.

How does mydawAI record whether I took my medicine?

Each reminder has one Taken button, and tapping it records that dose against the time and day. You do not need to open another app or write anything down.

Later, there are two ways to check:

  1. Ask Chintu on WhatsApp. Type "did I take my night tablet?" or send a voice note, and Chintu, the mydawAI koala, answers from your own record.
  2. Look at the calendar in the mydawAI web app. It shows what was taken and what was missed for each day.

A dose can be marked from 30 minutes before its time and only on its own calendar day. That keeps the record honest: you cannot tick tomorrow's dose today, and an old missed dose stays missed.

What should I do if I really don't know whether I took it?

Do not guess and do not take another one just to be safe. Check the leaflet that came with the medicine, or call your pharmacist or doctor and tell them exactly what happened. The right step depends on the medicine.

Does a pillbox solve the problem?

A pillbox helps a lot at home, but it has gaps. It only works if it was filled correctly, it cannot remind you, and it does not travel well.

Use it together with a reminder. Many people keep a weekly pillbox by the bed and still get the WhatsApp reminder, tapping Taken when the compartment is emptied. Ask your pharmacist before moving medicines out of their strips, since some should stay sealed until you take them. See pill reminder app vs phone alarm vs pillbox for a full comparison.

Small habits that make the record stick

Make recording part of the action, not a separate step afterwards.

  • Tap Taken with the glass of water still in your hand.
  • Say the name out loud: "BP tablet, done."
  • Keep the strip in the same place, and push the tablet out from the same end each time so the gap is easy to read.
  • If you take several medicines at once, record them together right away.

Can my family see whether I took my medicine?

Yes, if they manage your medicines in mydawAI and you have agreed to be in their Care Circle. With escalation on, mydawAI reminds you again if a dose stays untaken and then alerts the caretaker on WhatsApp. They do not need to call to ask. See missed-dose alerts for caregivers.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if I already took my pill today?
Only a record made at the time can tell you for sure. Use a daily pillbox or tap Taken on the mydawAI WhatsApp reminder, then check the app calendar or ask Chintu.
Should I take another pill if I'm not sure?
Do not take another one just in case. Check the medicine's leaflet or ask your pharmacist or doctor, because the right step depends on the medicine.
Can I mark a dose as taken later?
In mydawAI you can mark a dose from 30 minutes before its time until the end of that day. After the day ends it stays recorded as missed, so the history stays accurate.
Can I ask Chintu whether I took my medicine?
Yes. Message Chintu on WhatsApp or talk to it in the mydawAI web app and ask, for example, "did I take my morning tablet?" It answers from your own record.
